Over 260 investigations are currently being conducted by the EPPO in Romania, with estimated damages of nearly 2 billion euros

Currently, the EPPO is conducting 260 investigations in Romania, with estimated damages of approximately 1.97 billion euros, of which 7 involve VAT fraud, with damages estimated at 55.4 million euros.


A total of 23 ongoing investigations have a cross-border dimension. Additionally, assets worth 121.1 million euros have been seized.


In 2023, in cases handled by the EPPO, 29 individuals were indicted.


In Romania, the EPPO received 367 reports in 2023 – 15 from EU institutions, 331 from national authorities, 20 from the private sector, and 1 ex officio.


According to the EPPO report, 16 cases are in court, 5 have already received a first-instance decision, 7 have final decisions, and there have been 7 convictions.


Most investigations regarding fraud related to funding concern regional and urban development programs (88), other programs (54), agricultural and rural development funding programs (52), and social cohesion programs (30).
