The Government of Romania, during its meeting on May 16, 2024, adopted the Government Decision for the approval of the National Strategy against Human Trafficking for the period 2024-2028.
The adoption of this strategic document represents the next step Romania is taking in the efforts to modernize the process of managing the prevention and combat of human trafficking on national territory, as well as the assistance provided to victims.
This strategic document aims to establish, by the end of 2028, a national system in Romania to combat human trafficking, which will be allocated the necessary resources and will use them efficiently. Within this system, central and local institutions, in collaboration with non-governmental organizations, civil society, and international organizations, will implement effective measures to reduce the phenomenon, identify and assist its victims, and punish traffickers.
The goal of the Strategy is to reduce the impact and dimensions of human trafficking at the national level by prioritizing and streamlining the activities carried out by public institutions, civil society structures, and the private sector.
The Strategy is built around the four basic anti-trafficking pillars: Prevention, Punishment, Protection, and Partnership.
As a new element, this strategy aims to operationalize an integrated governmental mechanism for allocating the necessary funds for the protection and assistance provided to victims of human trafficking. This mechanism seeks to identify specific institutional sources and responsibilities for the integrated governmental funding of public and private services, social assistance, protection, and specialized services for victims of human trafficking.
